Star Wars: The Complete History Of The Darksaber
5. A Darker Rule
Not all of Death Watch succumbed to Maul’s rule. A band of renegades led by Bo-Katan fled, vowing that an outsider would never rule Mandalore but not all saw it their way. The remaining members of Death Watch followed the traditions of their ancestors and followed the Darksaber, the new Manda’lor.
With the Darksaber in his hands, Maul ruled Mandalore from the shadows, using Prime Minister Almec as a puppet to keep the people from rebelling. Under his rule, Maul lured his old rival, Obi-Wan Kenobi back to Mandalore using the Duchess Satine (now his prisoner) as bait.
After being captured, Maul forced Kenobi to watch as he used the Darksaber to kill the Duchess in front of him, wishing to destroy his spirit, rather than simply kill him.
But Maul’s rule of Mandalore was interrupted by the arrival of his former master, Darth Sidious. Maul had seemingly been building a power base to prove his worthiness to his old Master, but the Dark Lord only saw him as a rival and sought to destroy everything he'd built. Using the Darksaber to duel his former master, he was ultimately defeated and captured, with his brother being killed in the process.
