Star Wars: The Complete History Of The Darksaber
4. Abandoned
Following his defeat at the hands of his former Master, Maul seemingly abandoned the Darksaber and expressed great fear towards it, keeping it hidden and secure on his home planet of Dathomir.
When Republic forces, allied with Bo-Katan’s Nite Owls, invaded Mandalore in a bid to capture Maul, the former Sith dueled Ahsoka Tano with a new doubled-blade hilt that resembled the original that he fought with in The Phantom Menace. Maul was defeated and captured by the Republic, losing his lightsaber in the conflict, but years later, after the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire, Maul returned with yet another lightsaber, this time fashioned off one used by the Imperial Inquisitors.
It wasn’t until Ezra Bridger, a young Jedi who Maul wished to groom as his new apprentice, stumbled upon in Maul’s hideaway on Dathomir, having been there all this time. Having seen the Darksaber betray Vizsla, and then himself, losing Mandalore and his brother in the process, it was as though Maul considered the blade to be cursed, or he himself not worthy of it.
Battling the spirits of the fallen Nightsisters, Ezra used the Darksaber himself, eventually passing it on to his Mandalorian crew mate and friend, Sabine Wren.
