Stranger Things Season 3: 5 Massively Missed Opportunities

2. Not Exploring Will Byers As A Character

Will Byers has been at the heart of Stranger Things since the very beginning.

In the first season, he was trapped in the Upside Down, while in the second, he was literally possessed by it. Well, after deciding that the poor boy had been through enough emotional trauma, the Duffer Brothers decided to give him a break this season.

Unfortunately, this didn't mean that the character we know least about as a person would receive any kind of additional development, as three episodes into the season and he had been reduced to little more than a silent prophet of sorts, who could use his "Spider Sense" to warn his friends when the Mind Flayer was close. Thus, other than feel the back of his neck, Will had very little to do.

That's undoubtedly a shame because there were some real opportunities for development. From his desire to the spend some time with his friends to the questions surrounding his sexuality, the season presented a number of interesting possibilities without actually following up on any of them - and now that he's moved away from Hawkins with his family, a lot of this development could end up taking place off-screen.

Noah Schnapp is an incredible actor and he did a great job with what he had, but could you imagine what he would be capable of if the writers actually explored Will Byers instead of his connection to the Upside Down?
