Sometimes it's the most unexpected characters that end up providing us with the best material and, for the most part, that was certainly the case with Russian scientist Alexei.

Kidnapped by Hopper and Joyce, the character quickly evolved from a mildly arrogant prisoner who was happy to manipulate the rules to get a meal out of his captors into an unlikely ally who understood them (even though he didn't speak their language).

In the end, all he wanted was to be free and, given that he spent the whole season in handcuffs, it was easy for us, as viewers, to want that for him too. And it made it all the more heartbreaking that it was robbed from him as soon as he obtained it.

Like most of the newcomers, Alexei was one of the season's most enjoyable characters and, quite frankly, he deserved so much better.
