Supergirl Season 4: 3 Ups & 2 Downs From 'Blood Memory'
2. The Not-So-Distant Dreamer
Since her introduction, Nia Nal has been circling the season's main storylines while never quite at the heart of them. She did get a chance to shine on occasion, but it wasn't until she revealed her abilities to Kara and subsequently helped the team track down Agent Liberty that she was given some real spotlight. Thankfully, that was a sign of things to come.
The primary focus of this week's episode was Nia's return to her hometown - a story device that finally allowed us to get to know more about the character's backstory. The idea of the family reunion sparked some uneasy feelings for her as she revealed to Kara that her mother possessed the Dreamer abilities and that only her daughter was due to inherit the gift. Being transgender, the family overlooked the possibility that Nia could ever become the next Dreamer and, because of this, she was terrified of revealing the truth to them.
While her mother's happiness (and subsequent death) along with her sister's upset ensured that the trip was a rollercoaster of emotions for Nia, it brought her closer to where she is going. All that, plus the fact that she now knows Kara is Supergirl, has finally put her on a collision course with her super-heroic future. Her return to Parthas has set the stage for Dreamer and, it certainly looks like she's going to arrive sooner rather than later.
But the episode accomplished so much more than just that...
