While sisterhood struggles in the small town of Parthas were very much the focus of this week's encounter, there was a considerably strong amount of storytelling done around it in order to remind us what was actually going on in the world.

While there, Kara noticed that some civilians were wearing Children of Liberty masks and even walked around town with dogs that could spot aliens. Elsewhere, Alex experienced some difficulty with her memory in the aftermath of J'onn's mind-wipe, alerting her to the possibility that something was off. The episode's subplot, which revolved around dealers who were selling rage-inducing pills that turned people into alien-like creatures, brought everything together nicely as the D.E.O. hunted the dealers down just after they were attacked by the Children of Liberty.

This led to an all-out war in Parthas as Supergirl and Alex clashed over their attempts to stop the rage-induced Children of Liberty, with the latter now exhibiting much less compassion towards aliens - another sign of how she has changed without knowing about Kara's life as Supergirl.

Though all of these long-running stories played a reduced role here, their inclusion helped ground the standalone episode, reminding us that Liberty's anti-alien mission is far from over as well as the fact that Kara is losing the best part of her sister. It was a perfect reminder that, although Kara had taken a short-lived holiday, there was no rest for the Girl of Steel in this increasingly flawed world.
