Supergirl Season 4: 4 Ups & 3 Downs From 'Menagerie'

2. The Mission Comes First, Apparently

Supergirl Ben Lockwood Agent Liberty
The CW

While the return of Ben Lockwood was a welcome surprise, the storyline did come with its own issues - issues that were highlighted when his wife Lydia and son George visited him in prison.

Following his son's updates on the Children of Liberty's activities, Lockwood was a little firmer than usual as he told his son to "be a man..." before swiftly amending the statement to include "a man of action". Moreover, when he heard of the new deadly alien that had surfaced, he manipulated his son into going out and slaying it. That's right, he just casually wanted his teenage son to go out and battle a heart-eating monster that had overpowered people much bigger than him. No big deal, right?

Up until this point, Lockwood had always kept his family separate from his activities as Agent Liberty because, despite his flaws, he truly loved them and wanted to protect them. So, now we're suddenly expected to believe that he's totally fine with sending his only child out on a suicide mission? Really?

Supergirl deals with off-the-wall threats on a daily basis and it's totally believable because of the world that the writers have created. What isn't believable is the fact that the characters can suddenly act like a one-dimensional mastermind because the storyline requires them to.

Also, on that topic, are we really supposed to believe that the man's family just visits him to talk about his cause and then leaves? These are supposed to be real people, so they should be acting like it.
