Supergirl Season 4: 4 Ups & 3 Downs From 'Menagerie'

1. It Happened... Because We Said It Did!

Supergirl Alex Kara
The CW

Alex Danvers was front and center in a huge way this week, and not just as Kara's sister. While her relationship with her sister of Steel did play an important role, we also got to see Alex the D.E.O. Director and Alex the woman who wants to be seen as a person. Well, it appears that the writers were listening because, after this week Alex, they see you! The only problem is that we didn't, apparently.

Alex opened up to Kara and J'onn, informing them that she was unhappy about the lack of progression in her personal life and recalling how, a few months ago, she prepared her adoption portfolio and even went on a few dates (reinforced by the sudden appearance of a mysterious woman from Alex's missing 'me time' named Becca). Did she? If so, we certainly didn't see it happen.

Kara then claimed that Alex had indeed been moving forward with the adoption, and dating once again, before the Kryptonite bomb hit (which resulted in the D.E.O. Director dropping everything to take care of the injured Supergirl). She then claimed that Alex's misery was down to the fact that she had to prioritise Supergirl all the time and thus, had no time for a personal life. Not only is this analogy incorrect (remember Maggie, anyone?), it's also quite problematic.

The Kryptonite Bomb didn't hit until the conclusion of the second episode of the season. So, why wasn't there a single reference to Alex's life-changing activities throughout the first two episodes? It's all well and good highlighting her desires to get her life back on track, but fabricating a past that was never referenced before for the convenience of the plot undercuts what could be a really emotional story.

In order for us to appreciate how these events affect Alex, we must actually see them take place. More showing, less telling please.
