Supergirl Season 4: 5 Ups & 4 Downs From ‘Crime And Punishment’

1. Colonel Haley's Dilemma

Since her introduction on the show, Colonel Lauren Haley has been a hard character to get a handle on. She's appropriately firm and unlikeable for someone in her position, but the rest of her characterisation has been all over the place. At times, she comes off as bigoted, while at other times, she proves herself a true ally to the D.E.O. Thankfully, all of that came to a head in 'Crime and Punishment'.

Knowing that Lockwood's appointment in the President's cabinet was a shady move, Haley struggled to reconcile her feelings of uneasiness with her allegiance to the U.S. government. However, this week, the writers cleverly used Lockwood's planned ambush on Supergirl to force her to address this dilemma.

Haley may have been 'Crime and Punishment's most interesting character, because we were essentially watching someone who had always followed command because it was for the greater good of her country struggle with the realisation that those two things no longer went hand-in-hand. In doing so, she understood that she now had to make a choice: Follow command and instigate an attack on Supergirl or protect her for the greater good. Thankfully, she chose the latter.

There's more to Haley than meets the eye and, after she did the right thing this week, we're finally starting to see that. Let's hope the writers continue to explore this in the weeks to come.

Now, for the negatives...
