Supergirl Season 4: 8 Ups & 2 Downs From 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?'
Ups...
8. Lex Luthor Has Finally Arrived
Let's start with the obvious one and, in all honesty, the one thing that set this episode apart from the rest of the season.
Supergirl may be a show about the cousin of Superman that also happens to involve the Luthor family, but that doesn’t mean we should overlook just how monumental the inclusion of Lex Luthor is. The character is one of the rare comic book supervillains who transcended their own genre to become a pop culture icon. The archenemy of Superman has been a staple of DC Comics for decades, and now he is finally a part of Supergirl.
Much like they are with their Bat-Family, DC is very protective of its Superman characters. After all, who could forget when the Supergirl showrunners had to resort to making the Girl of Steel chat with her more famous cousin on an instant messaging app back in Season 1 because they weren’t allowed to use the Man of Steel? Nonetheless, they eventually made it happen, and where there is a Superman, you can bet that there is also a Lex Luthor.
Using both Lena and Superman himself, the writers have teased us with Lex during the show’s tenure and, while we loved every single reference, it always seemed unlikely that he would ever appear. But alas, here were, after nearly four years, and the Man of Steel’s longtime nemesis has indeed debuted, and it’s going to be very interesting to see what he has planned for Supergirl going forward. So far, so great.
