Supergirl Season 4: 8 Ups & 2 Downs From 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?'

6. Dark Days For J'onn J'onzz

J'onn's storyline this season has been an intriguing one. Intent on following his father's path of peace, he quit his duties at the D.E.O. and only resorted to being Martian Manhunter whenever necessary. However, his faith, inner strength and determination to steer clear of violence was all tested with the arrival of Manchester Black.

The pair's soured friendship threatened to take a new turn this week when Manchester, realizing J'onn's true potential as an enraged Martian, attempted to use the Staff of Kolar to make him see that he could be doing so much more to help the world in the field. However, their storied rivalry came to a shocking end when the former leader of The Elite pushed him too far (reminding him of his family's death on Mars) and, in a fit of rage, J'onn ripped the staff from his hands and used it to quite literally disintegrate him.

As Manchester Black crumbled, he told J'onn that the "new him" was "beautiful" and, from his point-of-view, it's easy to see why. This is a product of Manchester's creation and, although he won't be around to see it any longer, he will potentially leave behind a legacy through J'onn's actions. His death was one of those rare jaw-droppers that we just don't see on the Arrowverse shows these days, and the reason for this was because J'onn has always been the show's moral compass.

Now, he's a broken Martian with anger issues that just realized how broken he actually is. It's uncharted territory for both him and the show and it promises to provide us with some compelling storytelling as he figures out who, or what, he truly is.
