Supergirl Season 4: 8 Ups & 2 Downs From 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?'

1. Jon Cryer's Performance

Supergirl Lex Luthor
The CW

What is there to say about Jon Cryer's performance as Lex Luthor?

'O Brother, Where Art Thou' was intricate in its attempts to introduce us to the revered character because, well, it introduced us to two versions of him simultaneously. One was the firm, calculating and, quite frankly, intimidating mastermind that had brought Earth to its knees in an attempt to get rid of Superman four years ago, while the other was a broken, helpless and surprisingly tender man that, in the face of death, wasn't afraid to complement his sister on her success. They were essentially two different people, but they did have one similarity: Cryer was brilliant at protraying both of them.

Standing there in that suit as he proudly surveyed his damage, he looked every bit the Lex Luthor that we know and love. But it was his performance that stole the show as, in a single scene, he managed to relay every ounce of the passion, rage and instability that the character is renowned for while highlighting how that desire to kill Superman pushed him over the edge four years earlier. On the other hand, he delivered a strangely moving turn as the present-day iteration of Lex neared death and managed to portray him almost like a tragic Shakespearean character.

But it was all rounded off beautifully when he merged both of these contrasting performances into one in the episode's closing moments as Lex made a quick recovery and gleefully resumed his villainous ways.

From Gene Hackman to Michael Rosenbaum, we have seen many renowned takes on the Superman icon, so it's safe to say that Cryer had some large shoes to fill. However, by the time that his run on the show comes to an end, you can rest assured that we'll all be adding his name to the list of the all-time great Lex Luthors because, from what we have seen so far, he has already set the bar incredibly high.

Now, for the negative...
