Supergirl Season 4 Finale: 9 Ups & 2 Downs From 'The Quest For Peace'
1. Been There, Done That
For the longest of times, fans have criticised Supergirl over the fact that so many people have figured out Kara's secret identity as the Girl of Steel, and yet her best friend (and literal genius), Lena Luthor, hasn't been able to do so.
That long-running narrative, however, came to an end in the season finale when a supposedly dying Lex revealed the truth to his sister, laughing at the fact that she had been duped by all of her closest friends. While it was admittedly clever to tie the fact that Lena was the last one to know into the actual story, it still left a bad taste in the mouths of fans.
Not only did this rob Lena of figuring it out like the genius that she is, it has landed her with a predictably bland arc that may (or may not) lead to her down a dark path.
Now, this is a problem for multiple reasons because, first and foremost, we've been here so many times before with this character and, despite dancing with darkness, she always chooses the light. That, in itself, creates the second problem, as the writers are undoubtedly very well-aware of that fact and, as a result, they probably recognise that there's no going back this time.
Thinking about it, it does seem like this could be an attempt to position Lena as a future villain and, while there is no doubt that Katie McGrath would deliver in that kind of role, it's an unfortunate (and predictable) route that would undercut all of the rich development the character has undergone over the past three years.
