1. A Female Hero - Up
SuperGIRL? How can you call her SuperGIRL? It's anti-feminist or something. That's the protest of Kara, once the new moniker has been revealed, but then Cat delivers a speech about how she's a girl, and yet strong and smart and successful. Supergirl could easily have chosen to ignore the fact that it has a female superhero as its lead character, something which is unfortunately still a noteworthy occurrence, but instead it has chosen to really embrace that fact, and wear its colours on its sleeve. The speech from Cat is perhaps the most direct and obvious example of this, but it's far from being the only one (nor is it the most successful). There are both obvious and subtle hints to female empowerment throughout, such as the fact that she uses being a girl to her advantage to defeat the main villain, to her relationship with Alex and the fact she also kicks-ass, to that yes, she can be a superhero even though she's a female. More strong female characters are always welcome on the screen, especially in the superhero world, and in Supergirl TV may have just found one of its strongest yet.
