If this opening episode had a major weak point, it was with the villain, Vartox (who is actually an ally of Superman in the comics). He doesn't turn up until Supergirl arrives on the scene, as he's hell-bent on getting revenge on her mother. The fight scenes between them here aren't the problem, although the formulaic nature of the villain-of-the-week means that you know how it's going to play out. What's really the issue is his dialogue, which is far too cheesy even for this show. Whether it's one of The CW shows, or something from the MCU side of things, villains in superhero shows over the last year have been generally quite excellent, even with the minor weekly ones. Vartox doesn't really bring anything to the party; his performance his bland, and lines such as "I'll make you bleed, and your city will bleed" don't really help matters. Hopefully things will be a lot better with the big bad, teased at the end of the episode as being Kara's aunt. Now that should be an interesting development.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
