Supernatural: 10 Most Cringeworthy Moments

6. "Bugs" - The Whole Thing

You don't get a reputation for being one of the worst Supernatural episodes without some cringeworthy moments. In fact, this whole outing counts for an entry here as it's a wall-to-wall example of how much cringe can be contained in a 45-minute format.

"Bugs" was the eighth episode of the first season and was still a baby step in the direction of Supernatural. It showed as Dean/Sam ventured to Oklahoma to investigate a string of deaths related to insects in a new housing estate. There, they discovered that the creepy crawlies resulted from a Native-American curse. Cue the facepalms.

The first issue with "Bugs" is the woefully cliched set-up, with the curse feeling like a tacked-on and lazy attempt to replicate horror tropes. But then came the monsters themselves, as watching the brothers tackle these beasties was an exercise in groaning at poor visual effects.

Supernatural was hardly Avatar when it came to VFX, but the cheap monsters often had a quirky charm. That wasn't the case here, as these bugs were gross little images that didn't even look convincing. It was hard not to see right through to the actors swinging around at nothing on-set, making this one incredibly awkward episode to sit through.
