Supernatural has a bad habit of turning their heroes evil for a brief stint.
Both Sam and Dean at some points have been possessed or turned against one another through some devilish means. However, their loyal angel companion was always there to help bring them back and keep them on the right path.
Castiel had always been the sort of goofball of the trio so seeing him attempt to play the bad boy was comical at best. The sudden and brutal execution of his brother, Raphael, was an especially grim moment given how moral and just Cas had been in the past.
The excuse that Cas was acting for the greater good does not excuse his behaviour towards the others and his sudden shift in personality.
