Swamp Thing TV Show: 8 Things You Need To Know

6. He's A Mature Character

Swamp Thing DC
DC Comics

Since his first appearance, Swamp Thing has been a mature read. The maturity and weight of the book was so great that it was the first mainstream comic to actually disregard the Comics Code Authority altogether!

One of the most obvious themes has been protection of the ecosystem and a green message, even leading to a very surreal Greenpeace spot featuring the vegetable behemoth. There are times that the message can be beat over the head in a Captain Planet sort of way, but the stories held up the message better than most.

Exemplifying the maturity of Swamp Thing's story, Abby Arcane is actually arrested for marrying and having relations with Swamp Thing because of his plant-life and non-human form. That does get resolved, oddly by Batman.

The most important piece of the puzzle is that once "Anatomy Lesson" happened, and the truth about Alec Holland and Swamp Thing came to light, the centre of humanity shifted from a man trying to stay a man to focus on what makes humanity - the body or the soul.
