Comic book shows with dark aesthetics are by no means inherently bad. However, it seems that DC just can't quite figure out the difference between creating atmosphere and making something so dark that you have to strain your eyes just to figure out where the characters end and the "scenery" begins.

Titans' gloomy aesthetic was clearly chosen with Robin and Raven's dynamic in mind, but it completely works against characters like Beast Boy and Starfire, who are much better served in colorful environments.

This is something that Teen Titans nailed in its original run. In addition to its overall vibrant aesthetic, the show knew how to create a dark atmosphere when it was necessary, all while not making the change too jarring.

A great example of this comes in the show's fourth season, which focused heavily on Raven. Despite the story's dark overtones and imagery, they still managed to animate it in such a way that the important stuff vibrantly popped off the screen.

Creating a foreboding atmosphere is not about eliminating color, it's about using color correctly. Teen Titans clearly already knows this, whereas Titans seems to have missed the memo.
