That '70s Show: All Seasons Ranked Worst To Best
7. Season Five
Best Episode: Celebration Day
Audiences didn’t know what to expect from season five. We were previously left with Donna and Kelso ditching their complicated relationships with Eric and Jackie as they took a spontaneous road trip to California. Where would the series go from here?
The new season introduced us to the unpredictable coupling of Jackie and Hyde. Fans ended up adoring them because they were so opposite, yet somehow brought out the best of each other. Fez also bagged himself a relationship with Nina, his work colleague.
It was refreshing to see him with someone who wasn’t a one-dimensional caricature and it’s a shame their connection didn't progress further. Best of all, Eric and Donna reconciled and were set to get married.
Despite all the new and exciting twists, everything fell a bit flat. There was more friction between the group than ever before, particularly between Hyde and Kelso as they constantly battled over Jackie. It conveyed Red at his worst as he was intentionally ruining Eric’s life, all because of his son’s engagement to Donna. The tone just felt a bit cold.
The culture/setting felt much less grounded in the 1970s. And in general, the gang seemed to have lost their sense of fun and subversion. It was the first time where the show seemed more like a drama, rather than a comedy.
