The Chris Gethard Show: 15 Greatest Moments
13. TCGS Half Hour + Saddle Bee Neigh T Hive
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myAT06pQnxcTCGS loves its puns. TCGS loves taking jokes as far as they can. This episode is a combination of the two. The latter half of the show, a large parody of Saturday Night Live if the title did not make it entirely obvious, is important for its sheer volume of horse and bee-based puns.
The former half is also essentially a condensed version of the regular show that would serve as a test run for its shift into cable. Its "Mystery Boxes" game forces cast members to engage with items from past shows all situated in boxes bearing the names of well-known serial killers. Items include dog food and vinegar, a razor for haircutting purposes, and a blowup doll approximation of a male porn star.
The "cable television" format also includes a series of commercials for other public access shows by various characters within the TCGS universe. This combination of nearly every element from previous shows makes for a comedic fever dream. And then comes Saddle Bee Neigh-T Hive.
The word-based riff on SNL heightens the already high energy from the previous half hour by engaging in a pun after pun assault that quite literally ends with the beating of a dead horse. This whole episode is the show at its most playful and packs the best punch after being acquainted with many of the past episodes it references.
