5 Most Irritating Arguments Made Against Modern Doctor Who

1. It's Not Doctor Who

This one just makes me want to throw something at my computer whenever I see it. It€™s more common than you might think. I€™ve even heard it from a respected writer who shall remain nameless. It€™s a kind of catchall argument that disgruntled fans use when they aren€™t happy with the direction Doctor Who is going in. If they don€™t like the person running the show, the actor playing the Doctor, the new companion, a particular story arc or some combination thereof, they can simply say, €œThis is not Doctor Who€ and leave it at that. It may be comforting to them but it is never true. The great thing about Doctor Who is that its premise allows its protagonist to theoretically go anywhere and do anything. That said there are some common sense limits to this notion. An episode in which the Doctor runs around randomly killing people just because he feels like it goes against everything the series stands for and would therefore be worthy of the label €œNot Doctor Who€. But we all know that such an episode would never be made nor considered. Doctor Who is and always has been a family show. Sometimes it features things that may be more adult than we€™re used to, although nothing comes close to the novels published during the wilderness years. There€™s enough sex and violence in those to make Anne Rice€™s work look tame by comparison. The point is that while Doctor Who can€™t please everyone all the time it is at the very least FOR everyone. Not many shows can claim as much cross-generational appeal as Who can. So even if you€™re not happy with the series as it is now, think twice before saying, €œIt€™s not Doctor Who€. For all you know, it might be Doctor Who again the following week. I am a fan of film, Doctor Who (and sci-fi in general), fantasy, the adventure genre of gaming (the Myst series in particular), making lists and caesar salad.
