The Best And Worst Episode Of EVERY Doctor Who Series

Worst: The Vanquishers

Whilst Flux with a lot of fun, with some genuine promise, it became clear from about the midpoint that it was a train careening towards a cliff, and there were too many ideas in the air for any sort of satisfying resolution. Whilst the ride was fun, The Vanquishers is the moment where Flux’s faults catch up with it, and said train flies off the cliff in tremendous fashion.

Continuing a weird common thread of Chibnall finales, Swarm and Azure, the series antagonists, are promptly killed off by another last-minute antagonist… the embodiment of time itself? This follows on from Tecteun being killed the previous week by Swarm before she could do anything at all. This finale is also, much like the Timeless Children, one half exposition dump with the Doctor, and one half meandering runabout with the companions as they desperately try to wrap up loose threads left right and centre. It’s a tad messy…

Dishonourable Mention: Survivors of the Flux

Best: Village of the Angels

Nothing bad to say about this one - along with the Sontaran episode, these two relatively standalone stories are the highlights of Flux. We’ll give the title to Village of the Angels though - jam packed full of tense, creepy moments, a setting which suits the Angels to a tee, and some consistency with Moffat’s list of Weeping Angel rules make this a really fun romp. It also introduces my personal favourite side character of the Chibnall era, the lovable and bumbling Professor Eustacius Jericho, who’s just an all-round top bloke. The cliffhanger at the end of this one, and is in contention with Spyfall for the strongest of the era - that visual of Thirteen as an Angel is so striking. This episode makes us wonder what Flux could have been if not for the pandemic…

Honourable Mention: War of the Sontarans
