The Defenders: 8 Major New Details Revealed By Marvel And Netflix

8. Jessica Jones Will Be A Dark Psychological Thriller

Did you think Daredevil was dark? Well, it sounds like Jessica Jones is going to take the lead character down on even grimmer path than Matt Murdock's, based on comments from showrunner Melissa Rosenberg. She says their inspiration for the tone of the series ultimately stems from the fact that it's borrowing so much from Brian Michael Bendis' very dark and gritty Alias comic book series. As a result, Jessica's show will apparently push the envelope just as much as season one of Daredevil did. However, the promise of more impressive action scenes aside, and it seems like this will be a very different type of story. "What we€™ve always talked about is this is much more of a psychological thriller in that it is about what people do to each other on a very visceral and emotional level, and how that either forges you or breaks you," teases Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb. Rosenberg meanwhile adds: "For me, what€™s dark is where a character will go in their own psyche. It€™s not necessarily about stripping someone€™s clothes or pulling someone€™s eyes out; it€™s about how far can you let a character go,€ Rosenberg teases. €œWhat€™s attractive about that is she can go to some very questionable places in her own psyche. That€™s, to me, the darkness." That sounds like a fascinatingly complex and different approach to what we're used to seeing in typical superhero fare, but given Jessica's traumatic past, it makes a lot of sense that her series will be about her emotional journey of recovery after once suiting up to fight crime. That's obviously vastly different to Matt Murdock's evolution from vigilante to becoming a costumed hero.
