The Flash: 10 Questions Season 7 MUST Answer
6. Why Is Chester Joining The Team Full-Time?
Chester P. Runk was an fun adorkable recurring addition to the show throughout its sixth season as Team Flash attempted to help him with his Black Hole issue and even with his unrequited love for Natalie. However, after overcoming a number of issues, Chester discovered that Barry Allen was The Flash and, well, the rest is history... it seems.
As fun a character as Chester is, he worked really well in a supporting role - so much so that he didn't appear again after he helped Barry and Grodd unsync their minds. With that in mind, it was rather jarring to hear that actor Brandon McKnight was promoted to a series regular position for Season 7.
While McKnight will undoubtedly thrive with the extended screen-time, Chester was the perfect supporting character: Fun, light-hearted and a perfect source of levity when things got too dark. However, as we've seen over on Arrow with Felicity Smoak and Curtis Holt, when these OTT comics become regular characters, it can ultimately result in the dilution of all the elements that made their character so beloved in the first place.
Thus, it's important that the writers justify promoting a recurring character like Chester to this role when they could have given that position to someone like Kamillia or even Hartley instead. Furthermore, it's equally important that he doesn't become a one-note comic with no substance.
