4. The Trap (Season 1, Episode 20)

From the opening in Wells’s Time Vault, peppered with easter eggs and plot information, it was clear that The Trap was going to be good.
One of the strengths of the episode was that so many character got interesting things to do. Cisco had to deal with re-living his ‘death’ at the hands of Wells, Iris finally found out who Barry really is and Eddie grappled with being an ancestor of Thawne.
The titular trap is the real highlight of the episode. Trying to re-create the moment from Out Of Time where Thawne kills Cisco, the heroes think they’ve finally bested him, only for Thawne to prove that he’s two steps ahead of them. Tom Cavanagh finally gets to let loose and his flashback scenes with Barry in his coma bring out the best in the actor. He makes a perfect villain because we understand exactly what he’s doing and why he’s doing it, even if we don’t agree with his methods.
The Trap laid out all the cards on the table, balancing characters, mythology, and action, and set the stage for the incredible final episodes.
