6. Why Has Iris' Mother Returned Now?

It's the question Joe is asking, therefore we should be asking it as well because Joe is the voice of reason and wisdom and if he doesn't know then how the hell are we supposed to?! But in all seriousness, it's a very valid question, and something I wondered last week as well. It's been 20 years since she left, and her reason for coming back just doesn't really seem to hold up. She states that Iris needs her mother after losing Eddie. Except it's been months since Eddie died, so where have you been? How many other times in her life has Iris 'needed' her mother, but she hasn't shown up? So, why now? It really might just be as simple as that, a mother wanting to reconnect with a daughter who's suffered great personal loss and tragedy, but the timing of it suggests there's more here than meets the eye.
