The Flash Season 5: 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'Seeing Red'
Down...
1. Illogical Plot Conveniences
The biggest issue with making us all aware of Team Flash's secret weapon was that it also made us aware of the convenient hoops the writers had to jump through in order to delay the inevitable. This was evident in the episode's opening battle when a fully prepared Team Flash confronted, and quickly defeated, Cicada. They arrived. They saw. They conquered.
Of course, things couldn't be that simple or we wouldn't have a season to finish, right? So, of course, Nora would then tell Frost that they needed Caitlin to help the injured metahuman and, just like that, the ice queen allowed her more wholesome alter-ego fade through.
Here’s the issue: Caitlin was supposedly needed for her medical expertise and yet all she was able to conclude was that the meta needed hospital. Couldn’t Killer Frost have concluded the exact same thing? Furthermore, where did she disappear to in such a short amount of time? Wouldn’t it have made more sense to have The Flash or Nora (both of whom are powerless against Cicada) make use of their speed and quickly take the woman to safety, leaving the effective Killer Frost to monitor/battle Cicada?
While it made sense that the writers wanted to save the showdown between Frost and Cicada until the episode’s conclusion, this sequence just didn’t make sense at all. It defied logic and was simply a convenient way to temporarily write Killer Frost out, allowing Cicada to injure Nora and ultimately postpone the battle. Unfortunately, its lack of sense and logic ended up undercutting what was undoubtedly a terrifying moment.
