The Flash Season 5: 5 Ups & 1 Down From ‘The Death Of Vibe’
Down...
1. Been There, Done That
Nora West-Allen's introduction has been really well-handled by the writers. The character may be a natural speedster but being a superhero doesn't come quite so naturally to her, and its great that this is being fleshed out over a number of episodes, as opposed to the show's usual one-and-done format. However, in order to sustain the narrative this week, the creative team unfortunately retreaded back over familiar territory.
In this week's episode, Nora once again rushed into a building without thinking and ended up on the wrong side of a booby trap. This is undoubtedly another rookie mistake, but the issue doesn't lie in the fact that she's a rookie or that she keeps making mistakes - it's that she keeps making the same mistake.
For the past three episodes, Nora has run off on Barry, heading straight into danger in a desperate attempt to impress her father - which always results in the mission going south. This time it was merely a contrivance to force a narrative in which Nora takes the time to think about things before rushing - something she was given the opportunity to do at the episode's conclusion.
While this was a great story move, it felt like the writers didn't trust their audience to remember that she ran in half-cocked last week and thus, forced it to happen again just to remind them that she's a rookie. Contrary to popular belief, people do actually watch previous episodes.
