The Flash Season 5: 6 Problems It Must Fix
1. Too Many Filler Episodes
It's well-documented that few shows do filler episodes as well as The Flash. When it first debuted, we got a selection of fun, action-packed and epic adventures that served their purpose and allowed the Scarlet Speedster to learn something new, while also serving as a breather from the main storyline. However, Season 4 took things too far.
The season's main plot revolved around DeVoe's plans for the newly-created "bus metas". But before we could truly understand why he needed them, the plot required us to get to know every single one of them personally. As a result, the season was littered with countless villain-of-the-week adventures - none of which proved to be anywhere near as enjoyable as previous seasons' outings.
While you can't doubt the writers' creativity for managing to tie all these seemingly filler episodes to the main plotline, a lot of them felt redundant and, as a result, we were left with only about seven truly important episodes.
We're moving into an era now where TV shows are starting to cut filler episodes out altogether and instead just produce shorter, tighter seasons. While The Flash doesn't need to do that, because there are other criminals outside of the Big Bad, Season 5 does need to significantly reduce the amount of villain-of-the-week episodes.
