The Handmaid's Tale Season 2: 5 Ups And 1 Down From 'Postpartum'

3.Eden's Character Development

Ever since Eden arrived in Gilead, viewers have been finding it tough to warm to her. It's understandable, really, as her presence meant that Nick could no longer show his affection for June, which left our protagonist with no one to talk to. Moreover, Eden proved to be extremely pious, and honoured Gilead's laws down to a tee, which made her extremely dangerous. Let's face it: had she reported the letters, Nick would've been facing some severe consequences. Props to the writers though - a few red herrings made it look like she really was going to be a problem.

But it turned out that this wasn't the case at all. The young woman just wanted to be loved, and her true motives were revealed in Postpartum through a great scene with June. This one conversation gave Eden a purpose, and made her likeable. She wasn't a threat - she was just trying to be the best wife she could be. Seeing her stand by her principles after she was apprehended solidified her as a true hero. This brave woman is a far cry from the sweet innocent girl we met earlier in the season.

It was nice that we were finally given the opportunity to get to know Eden properly, especially because of what came next.
