The Handmaid's Tale Season 2: 6 Ups & 2 Downs From 'The Last Ceremony'
2. The Truthful Goodbye
The internal conflict June faced during the meeting with Hannah is excellently conveyed through Elisabeth Moss' flawless acting ability. There's her daughter, right in front of her, yet she couldn't be further from her. It's heartbreaking and, as Hannah's memories of the good days with June come flooding back to her, she struggles to say goodbye also.
But, in spite of Hannah's young age, June decided that it was better to be brutally honest with her daughter. When Hannah asked if she'll ever see June again, the handmaid replied, letting her daughter know that she'll "try." She doesn't specify what "try" means, but presumably it means she's not going to give up on her daughter. But then again, June also told Hannah to live her life and to enjoy it with "her parents," insinuating that she might actually never see her again, which somehow makes this heart-wrenching scene even harder to stomach.
No, you're crying.
