The Handmaid's Tale Season 2: 6 Ups & 2 Downs From 'The Last Ceremony'
1. The False Alarm
The Last Ceremony certainly lived up to its title after that heinous scene between the Waterfords and June. However, there's no denying that the writers were cleverly trying to throw us off the scent throughout the episode by using this title, because we - understandably - thought it was referring to the birthing ceremony, which was beginning to take place at the start of the episode.
However, the contractions proved to be nothing, meaning that the whole thing was a false alarm. Much like the Eden scene, this particular story beat was used to make Serena want to move the pregnancy along, which of course led to the disturbing rape scene. However, the false alarm wasted a lot of time - in fact it was practically half an episode. It'll be a huge moment for the show when June finally does give birth, which is why this false alarm should've been avoided.
