The Handmaid's Tale Season 2: 7 Ups And 1 Down From Smart Power
Downs...
1. Erin's Lack Of A Storyline
This week's episode of The Handmaid's Tale was damn near perfect. However, there was just one thing that stood out for all the wrong reasons. It's not a problem with this episode specifically, it's more of a storyline problem. It's Erin - and the lack of purpose that her character currently serves.
Erin met Luke back at the beginning after he was separated from June, and the young woman has been with him all this time. Initially, she was mute, but now she's able to speak and, apart from blessing us all with the brilliant "Blessed be the frootloops" line earlier this season, she has had next to zero screen time.
This was her first appearance in several episodes, and yet all she did was sit there in the background like some sort of prop, giving her two cents only when the script absolutely called for it.
There's real storyline potential with this character, but for some reason it's not being explored.
