The Handmaid's Tale Season 2: 8 Ups And 2 Downs From 'First Blood'

Ups...

8. The Baby Is Alive

The Handmaid's Tale June
Hulu

Last week's intense episode saw June come to terms with the fact that she might lose the baby. When getting herself ready for bed, she discovered that she was bleeding profusely and, if Nick hadn't found her in time, both she and the baby could've died.

Thankfully, she survived, and we learned in First Blood that the baby is also alive — despite the bleeding. This was a relief, as too much time has been invested in the importance of the handmaids getting pregnant, so it was inevitable that our protagonist would find herself in the dreaded predicament. To rob us of the opportunity to see June carry the baby to full term, and then potentially have to hand the baby over to the Waterfords, would've not only been cruel, it would've been foolish.

The haemorrhage gave June a much-needed wake-up call, and she is now back to her old rebellious self — something that has been lacking in the last few instalments.
