The Mandalorian: 10 Things We Learned From Star Wars Celebration
1. Uhm, Actually... The Droid Is Called IG-11
IG-88 only has about a couple of seconds screen time in Empire Strikes Back, but they quickly established themselves as a formidable bounty hunter. An assassin droid manufactured solely to kill, IG-88 found renewal in the expanded universe, and though most outlets have led with that particular droid being the one to feature in The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau set the record straight over the weekend.
Via Entertainment Weekly, it turns out that the droid in question is - while still an IG unit - actually called IG-11. They will be voiced by Taika Waititi, and feature at the end of the teaser decimating storm troopers with a selection of blasters.
The droid is quickly shaping up to be a scene-stealer - especially so, with Waititi behind them. Fans may lament the fact the original IG unit isn't getting in on the act, but with assassin droids already few and far between in live action, let's just be happy that one is appearing in The Mandalorian.
