One of the most reviled parts of Star Wars history is the now infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. For some reason, Favreau seems determined in season one of The Mandalorian to make it relevant. The most obvious attempt is references made to Wookie Life Day, the weird version of Christmas in the special. But the other reference is far more subtle.

An animated sequence in the Holiday Special features the first appearance of the galaxy's most notorious bounty hunter, Boba Fett. In that sequence, he carries a long, two pronged rifle called an Amban Phase-Pulse Rifle. Djarin carries a very similar weapon throughout The Mandalorian, using it with devastating success.

It's a powerful, ranged blaster that disintegrates his opponents with one shot. Using the Amban Phase-Pulse Rifle is a deep cut but a solid reference nonetheless. The producers are definitely doing their homework.
