Over the course of The Mandalorian, the audience and Din discover more about the Mandalorian people and their complicated past.

Initially, it came as a shock to longtime viewers of The Clone Wars and Rebels series that Din was forbidden from removing his helmet and that the Mandalorians lived underground in secret. Previously, the Mandalorian people had been shown to be a proud race who honoured tradition but never fussed over whether their helmet was on or off.

Then, the Armourer tells a tale of the Great Purge, an event which shakes Din and his fellow warriors to the core. The purge seemingly brought an end to the existing Mandalorian way of life and forced them into hiding - that is, until Din meets Bo-Katan and her Nite Owl remnants who freely take their helmets off.

Bo explains that DIn is part of a group known as the "Children of the Watch", a fanatical religious group devoted to the ancient traditions. As Din grows during Season Two, he defers more from his strict upbringing until that heartbreaking farewell with Grogu. Does this mean that he has now moved past "the way"?
