The Newsroom: 5 News Stories That Should Be Covered In Series 2

4. Benghazi Terrorist Attack

Chris Stevens I'll be honest... it would be a deafening blow to this show's credibility if Aaron Sorkin doesn't at least attempt to cover this news story, especially given the New York setting and Will McAvoy's Tea Party witch hunt. The United States consulate in Benghazi, Libya was attacked on September 11, 2012, the 11 year anniversary of the devastating attack on New York City, Washington D.C. and central Pennsylvania. The attack claimed the lives of four State Department employees, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens. This is a big story that McAvoy should break because since that fateful day, the Tea Party and even some moderates like himself have spoken up demanding explanations from President Obama and the State Department regarding conflicting reports of denied requests for additional security, the whereabouts of President Obama that night, and a stand down order allegedly issued to the military in the subsequent rescue operation. While I also identify as a moderate Republican, I won't go into my own opinion of the situation, but I can definitely see this story being the catalyst for an inner crisis for Will. As more of his own party question the integrity of this administration, could he feel the need to give the Tea Party yet another on air spanking, or could he begin to experience a dilemma between his own views of the situation and the reportable story from Washington? Could Benghazi be to Will what Fukushima was to Sloan?
