7. No Fourth Wall
In entertainment the fourth wall is an imaginary wall separating the audience from the action. Occasionally characters have been known to break the fourth wall momentarily, but The Office removes it all together. Mainly because of its presentation as a documentary the fourth wall is not needed allowing characters to look at, and speak directly to the viewer. This brings us into their world, were part of the show, when someone does something or says something stupid a quick glance to the camera makes us feel as though were right there with them sharing a silent what an idiot with a friend. The best part of it all is that the characters are aware they are being watched. Occasionally this knowledge will guide their actions as they attempt to impress us. Sometimes bragging, as is the case with Toby and his novels, or they might try and show off a bit, like Andy and his singing. They want us to like them, to think theyre cool and funny, and more often than not this leads to those socially awkward moments. On the less comical side of things without the constraints of the dreaded fourth wall characters are giving the opportunity to try and connect with the viewer, sometimes even confiding in us. This creates the feeling that were not so much watching a television series as were just hanging with some buds, sharing in their pain, sorrow and most importantly their laughs.
