If you ever want to find out just how talented Ben Platt really is, you don't even have to watch a full episode of The Politician (though please do); all you really need to do is watch one of the season's few musical performances.
There's a raw gentleness to his voice that resonates with viewers, and it seems that each song lets you into Payton's life a little bit more, allowing us to see him better than any lines of dialogue ever give us the chance to.
Additionally, Ryan Murphy's expertise in using music to further the story shows here as, even though there aren't many performances, each song complements the story incredibly well - Platt's cover of Joni Mitchell's 'River' is a perfect example of this.
