The Simpsons: 10 Best Episodes From Season 30 Onwards

4. I’m Dancing As Fat As I Can

Treehouse Of Horror XXXI
20th Century Studios

Season 30, Episode 13

The 2019 Valentine’s Day episode focused on one of the most significant commitments in modern relationships, the pact of watching a series together.

When she must rush to her Aunt Eunice’s death bed, Marge pleads with Homer not to watch the new series of Netflix’s Odder Stuff (Treehouse of Horror XXX features a more comprehensive Stranger Things parody). She refers to the show as the glue that seals the couple’s love stating: “[t]he nine hours we watch that show together is our thing. And we don’t have a lot of things”.

Homer inevitably caves, is caught, and must find a new avenue to forgiveness. When Netflix’s algorithm reveals Marge watches dancing shows when alone, Homer develops dance ability to win back his wife. The story's conclusion is a genuinely heartfelt moment for the Simpson Family.

The episode’s humour is based around modern television. The issues, content, and references are fresh and funny. A standout algorithm gag recommends The Cosby Show to Homer “[b]ecause you watched an ‘80s show featuring a monster”. There are also humorous shots at binge-watching, Scandinavian dramas with story driven nudity, the decline of modern television, and more.
