The Simpsons: 10 Best Episodes From Season 30 Onwards
3. Highway To Well
Season 31, Episode 17
With Maggie beginning day care, Marge is inadvertently hired by Well + Good. She is days into her new job before she realises it is a high-end cannabis boutique. Marge is initially wary that she is a “drug dealer” but is comforted by everybody’s blasé attitude.
Marge-centric episodes work best when she is cast as the outsider and has one of Springfield’s zanier characters to play off. In this episode it’s retired heavyweight boxer Drederick Tatum, who founded Well + Good after experiencing pain in his “punching hands” and “blocking face”.
Meanwhile, Otto experiences an existential crisis finding that legalised weed is a buzzkill. He teams up with Homer and Moe to make a legal dispensary that makes “it feel like you [are] scoring weed from your old-school pot connection”. This takes the form of a mock stoner living room in the back of Moe’s bar.
The episode’s “drugs war” provides a new and innovative tension
for the couple. It is loaded with stoner humour, which just about avoids cliché.
Plus, there’s a brief but entertaining Kevin Smith cameo.
