The Simpsons: 10 Best Ever Treehouse Of Horror Stories
7. The Genesis Tub (Treehouse of Horror VII)
There are a lot of great Simpsons bits based around science fair projects - witness Lisas Rival and Duffless - and while The Genesis Tub isnt quite up there with those greats, theres a lot to enjoy: Marge making square pancakes because the waffle irons in the shop, and the brief return of the nerds from Homer Goes To College, for example.
Theres also a very, very niche joke about the fact that Lisas managed to create Lutherans. Youd need to know that Lutheranism formed as a response to dissatisfaction with a lot of the practices prevalent in Catholicism at the time - the trade in relics and indulgences, for instance - as profiteering masquerading as piety.
One particularly prolific seller of indulgences, the friar Johann Tetzel, even had a catchphrase: As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs. It makes total sense that a society watched over by Lisa would populated with dissenters and intellectuals who despised the idea of profit over salvation, doesnt it?
