The Simpsons: 10 Best Ever Treehouse Of Horror Stories
5. Attack Of The 50-Foot Eyesores (Treehouse of Horror VI)
Aside from all that, Attach of the 50-Foot Eyesores is one of the few Treehouse of Horror segments which goes beyond parodying just a single film or horror trope and uses the expanded horizons of the non-canon episode format to attack consumerism and mass advertising.
Ironically enough, the suddenly vivacious advertising mascots are killed off by a deeply cutesy advertising jingle telling the townspeople to just ignore them. As a statement of consumer power, its a pretty radical reframing of one of the big narratives of postmodern America - rather than people being slaves to advertising and mass media, helpless and unable to exist without multinational conglomerates telling them what to eat and drink and wear, Attack of the 50-Foot Eyesores says that capitalism is entirely dependent on the consumer.
Oh yeah, and the jingles sung by Paul Anka (Its got Paul Ankas guaranteeeee Guarantee void in Tennessee), which means that it has only rarely left my head in the last fifteen years.
