What better episode to steal the number one spot than the one that started it all? The original Treehouse of Horror was such a success that it resulted in a tradition to be repeated every year since. The concept and the stories are the best of what the series has to offer and each is incredibly entertaining. If you're looking for the best in Halloween programming look no further than ToH I. The episode begins with Lisa and Bart telling scary stories in their treehouse, hence the title of the special and its sequels. Homer has returned from trick-or-treating - because it's totally legit for adults to do so - and decides to listen in. What transpires is a piece of television history. The three stories told within the episode all envelop everything that made us fall in love with the Simpsons in the first place. Each tale emphasizes the characterization and interaction of the characters. "Bad Dream House," is a tale of bleeding walls and levitating appliances as the evil home attempts to permanently evict the Simpsons. After manipulating the family into almost butchering one another, Marge is finally able to stand up for them. Ultimately, life with the Simpsons seems to prove more frightening than any scares presented in the segment, and the house commits residential suicide. "Hungry are the Damned" introduces the Rigelian aliens, Kang and Kodos who manage to appear in every special following, but the best of the segments sees the Simpsons take on one of the darkest poems of all time, Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven." There's just something quite brilliant about combining this family with a literary classic that allows this episode to claim our number one spot. With Bart as the eponymous raven this episode is not only the best of the Halloween specials, but one of the greatest of the hundreds of episodes of the Simpsons.
