3. Ned Flanders And Mrs Krabappel Get Married

Edna Krabappel was well-known for being a lonely teacher who covered up her dissatisfaction with her job and lack of companionship by extensively dating around. After the death of Maude, Ned Flanders was given a few stories in which he dated new women but struggled to make a lasting connection with anyone. With two prominent supporting characters with a lonely love life sitting on the bench, the writers decided to pair them up and see what would happen. Pairing up Ned and Edna initially seemed weird, but it did make some sort of sense at the time. Both characters have been down the well-trodden path of being single and alone, and pairing them up seemed to conveniently solve the loneliness and companionship problem. What differentiated this pairing from each character's recent previous romantic entanglements is that rather than break them up at the end of the episode, the writers were indecisive over whether to keep 'Nedna' as a permanent fixture to the show and to deal with their relationship problems as they come. Rather than debate about it, the writers decided to let the fans decide whether or not 'Nedna' remained an item, which resulted in a resounding and heartwarming yes. But sadly, Ned and Edna's (and all the fans') happiness lasted only for a short time...
