The Simpsons: 10 Funniest Episodes Ever Made

1. Marge Vs. The Monorail (Episode 12, Season Four)

It's somewhat shocking to think that Yeardley Smith, voice of Lisa Simpson, referred to Marge vs. the Monorail, undoubtably the funniest episode the show ever produced, as "one of our worst." Indeed, the Conan O'Brien-penned yarn - which is often thought to be the definitive Simpsons episode - was initially met with a somewhat muted reaction from fans and critics alike, who thought that the weird and lightweight tone was inappropriate.

What is apparent now, of course, is that Marge vs. the Monorail stands as the outright funniest 22-minutes in Simpsons' history. This is one episode where the jokes pile up relentlessly - and each and every one hits its mark. From the iconic musical number, the Leonard Nimoy cameo ("Didn't I?"), to the endless array of hilarious sight gags, it's jam-packed with material from start to finish (and who can forget the Escalator to Nowhere?).

If Marge vs. the Monorail lacks the emotion or intelligence of "classic" Simpsons episodes, in terms of actual, bonafide hilarity, there is no better episode in the entire canon.
