The Simpsons: 10 Greatest Apu Moments

Another entry that comes in an episode where Apu is not the star, although this is one of his most influential moments. The episode centres around Lisa becoming a vegetarian, something which continues for the rest of the show’s run. In true Lisa style though, she takes a rather intolerant stance to those who don’t follow her new diet.

Frusrated by the lack of support she receives during Homer’s barbeque, Lisa rushes to the Kwik-E-Mart. She ends up eating a hot dog, feeling a vegetarian will never fit in in Springfield. However, Apu tells her they’re tofu and that he himself is vegetarian too.

He then takes her up to the roof to meet two other notable vegetarians; Paul and Linda McCartney. Through their counsel, Lisa learns it’s possible to be vegetarian but still tolerate meat eaters. While the narrative of the episode is great, the comedy comes from Apu’s claim that he was the Fifth Beatle, and Paul offering Lisa a song. She agrees excitedly, only for Apu to grab some drums and start shrieking out an awful version of Sgt Pepper’s.
