The Simpsons: 10 Greatest Apu Moments

6. Valentine’s Day

Simpsons Apu
Fox

Though this episode occurs before the time Apu cheats on Manjula, he still fears he’s under appreciated her. After spending too many hours at work, he uses the week leading up to Valentine’s Day to shower her with gifts.

There’s some whimsically inventive ones in the mix, like the time he gets himself covered in chocolate and delivered to Manjula.

This show of affection comes at a cost though. With a lot of very public gestures, many other Springfield residents get jealous. The likes of Marge, Sarah Wiggum, Maude Flanders and Krabappel all push their lovers to do more to match Apu’s stunts. There’s a blink and you’ll miss it gag where Chief Wiggum complains that it’s $10 a pill too.

The best part of this episode is the finale though, as Homer sabotages Apu’s final gift; a love note to Manjula written in the sky. The ‘I Love’ part comes out fine, but the name ends up obscured. Every woman in Springfield then interprets the blurred message as being for them, meaning all is well again. Except for Marge. Fortunately, Homer’s sabotage takes him through a rose patch, and he falls from the sky to shower Marge with flowers.
